MANAV SADHNA HOSTEL
HISTORY
|
One of the things that makes Manav Sadhna unique is its setting, in the shadow of history. Manav Sadhna’s main Hostel is located on the grounds of Sabarmati Ashram in a very famous building, known as Udyog Mandir. | ||
Udyog Mandir was a temple of industry, self-reliance and dignity. It was a laboratory that gave shape to Gandhi’s economical beliefs. His khadi technology was developed here. Volunteers from all over the country were trained here, and they helped to spread the message of swaraj through kadhi in the villages. The spinning wheel played a pivotal role in the freedom struggle. |

The foundation for Udyog Mandir was laid in 1918 during the textile workers strike. Mahatma Gandhi, himself, actually stayed in a small room at Udyog Mandir for 3 months, before shifting to a nearby building that faced the Sabarmati River.

In 1933, Gandhi turned Udyog Mandir over Harijan Sevak Sangh. The Harijan’s are referred to as the ‘Untouchable’s’ in India. From 1933-1982, Udyog Mandir became a School for Rural Harijan girls. In 1982, it became a residence hostel for the children of scavenger’s, the lowest among society. And in the mid 1990’s, Udyog Mandir was adopted by Manav Sadhna as a hostel for boys and girls. Today, this very famous building is bustling with activity, as 106 of Manav Sadhna’s ‘extended family’ stay here. These children come from the slums in and around Gandhi Ashram. In addition to non-violence, Gandhi’s major themes in his life were the eradication of the untouchable and maintaining a clean and sanitary environment. Ironically, 70 years after Gandhi left Sabarmati to gain freedom for India, work is still being carried out daily and the same themes are being spread by the staff of Manav Sadhna. |
